Friday, Aug. 16, 2013 Gov. Pat Quinn signed into law a statewide ban on the use of hand-held devices behind the wheel.
Motorists can still gab and drive if they use hands-free devices. Fines start at $75 for the first offense.
The law takes effect Jan. 1, 2014.
“Too many Illinois families have suffered because of accidents that could have been prevented,” Quinn said in a statement. “Anyone driving a car should be careful, responsive and alert behind the wheel.”
